Roberts + Rogers Cabernet Sauvignon combines the passion and experience of two men and the bounty that is Napa Valley’s Howell Mountain. Created by Robert Young and Roger Louer, the wine represents a stellar mix of both man and nature and reflects the wine expertise and skills of winemaker Barry Gnekow and his maximizing of the Howell Mountain terroir.
Roberts + Rogers planted their estate vineyard in the fall of 2000, adjacent to Las Posadas Road and near other well-known award-winning wineries like O’Shaughnessy, Kendall Jackson, Burgess, Outpost, La Jota, and Neal. Cultivating just over 17 acres, the property enjoys an ideal aspect for ripening. Howell Mountain is noted for both its highly volcanic soils that add an indelible minerality to its wines and for its position above the valley’s fog line. Howell Mountain’s orientation reaps cooler temperatures during the day and warmer temperatures at night which results in an even, long growing season.
Roberts and Rogers released their 2004 inaugural vintage in August 2007 to a terrific response, including 92pts from Connoisseur’s Guide. The 2004 vintage was ideal on Howell Mountain, with early budbreak after the winter rains stopped in late February, a warm growing season and an early harvest with moderate temperatures and no rain. Less than 2 1/4 tons per acre was harvested at the estate property. The 2004 vintage will be known for rich, ripe and concentrated wines with an abundance of flavors. It has a rosy deep claret red color, with aromas of the classic Howell Mountain black cherry, blackberry and plum hints which are intertwined with subtle oak nuances. The tannins are long and velvety and are especially present in the wines’ mid-structure. Like so many Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignons of this vintage, this wine is really beginning to open up and display its many fantastic attributes.
Their sophomore release, the 2005 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was released in the spring of 2009. Early reviews include 93 points from the Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast. This wine is now available online and will be at select restaurants in the coming months.
