Barry Gnekow is the award-winning winemaker for Roberts + Rogers. Barry’s credentials are impeccable and his successes many, including Double Gold, Best of Class and Gold ratings. Having grown up in a winemaking family business, he was exposed early on to wine, fostering a passion and palate early in life. To push his skills further, Gnekow obtained his Bachelors Degree in Biochemistry and his Masters Degree in Enology from University of California at Davis. His "hands on" approach to wine making and his erudite scholarly tendencies at keeping abreast of changing conditions in the market place qualify him for being one of the best in the wine game. Gnekow is recognized as one of the "rising stars" on Howell Mountain.
Barry’s career bloomed early. Counted among his successes is the overhauling of the winemaking program at J. Lohr Vineyards and Wines in Paso Robles, working with Hahn Estates to improve their wines and create and award-winning second label, and creating the first wines for Calistoga Cellars where he continues as winemaker. But one of his acme achievements was the creation of the non-alcohol wine under the “Ariel” label.
Barry Gnekow has been winemaker for Roberts & Rogers from the conception, bringing his decades of wine making knowledge and experience to the table. Barry’s education, background and talent along with the high quality of the Roberts + Rogers Howell Mountain grapes have combined to produce superior Cabernet Sauvignon from its first release (2004) to today. As Barry says, “…this (the 2004) is a very big wine!” Gnekow is renown for his forward, fruit-rich style that will both be delicious upon release and continue to age and develop.
Barry’s second love after winemaking is surfing. After harvest and at different times in the winter, he usually heads off to some exotic spot where the waves are high and the days are long…………..and where a bottle of Roberts + Rogers is decanting for dinner.
